Idling Neurons

“Dying brain cells swell and fluid expands into surrounding tissues. The damaged tissues surrounding the original injury of the brain is referred to as the "ischemic penumbra." The cells in this area contain idling neurons, are lethargic and non-functional, but remain viable due to low oxygen levels.

These cells have the potential of being restored to normal or near-normal function through newly formed blood vessels resulting from HBOT, bringing fresh blood (with oxygen) and nutrients to the damaged tissue. Neurons gradually reconnect, restoring the penumbra area of brain tissue and increases body function. HBOT will not restore dead brain tissue, but will restore some of the surrounding tissues."
