~Update : 11 August 2003
Dear Friends,
Our family experienced a tragedy on Memorial Day 2001, my three-year-old son, Jake Chavers; nearly drown after falling in to the backyard pool. It took 20 minutes to resuscitate him.
Jake spent 6 months at the hospital and was later transferred to a hospital for handicapped children. While at this hospital I heard about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Rapid Recovery Hyperbarics in San Bernardino. The Neurologist told me that Jake would be in a vegetative state for the rest of his life and I should think about taking him off life support. He was sweating profusely and was very spastic with seizures.
There was a fundraiser started to give Jake the treatments. Later, I found that the some of the money raised for Jakes treatment was missing.
Currently Jake has had 70 sessions and is now able to come home with our family and live. He is able now to regulate his temperature and the seizures have dramatically reduced. He is no longer spastic at all. He is able to track objects and look at you when you speak to him, even though the Neurologist said he was blind! Jake can hold his head up for several minutes. He was extremely constipated prior to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, but now his has normal daily bowel movements. He is off all medicine and is completely breathing on his own!
We realize that with near drown victims there will be many more Hyperbaric Oxygen treatments needed. Nevertheless we are hopeful that this therapy will continue to help Jake and have seen very promising results thus far.
Sincerely,
Gina Chavers
Mother of Jake
