Elevated Atmospheric Pressure is not a Placebo

Dr James says that plain air under elevated atmospheric pressure is not a placebo. Dr C. E. Williams, (of the Brompton Hospital, London), said the same thing, "The use of atmospheric air under different degrees of atmospheric pressure, in the treatment of disease is one of the most important advances in modern medicine, and when we consider the simplicity of the agent ... we are astonished that in England this method of treatment has been so little used".

This appeared in the British Medical Journal in 1885!!!

Dear Rodney

Thank for this quotation. I was aware of this statement, which dates from the halcyon era of compressed-air therapy. It is amusing that the Lancet correctly did not allow the Collett study to be termed a controlled study and required the use of 1.3 atm abs that is about 1300 hecto Pascals to be referred to as "slightly pressurized”. However, to refer to a 30% increase as slight is ridiculous. An illustration of this? We are all aware of the wind which IS due to small changes in atmospheric pressure - for example the lowest atmospheric pressure recorded at sea level in Scotland is 925 hPa and the highest 1054 hPa.

Best wishes

Philip James MD
