(HBO) Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: acute indications Armin Kemmer BG-Unfallklinik Murnau
Abstract
Treatment of patients with oxygen under pressure in hyperbaric chambers is now internationally recognized for several acute and chronic diseases. For acute and emergency situations such as are encountered in the case of diving accidents and gas embolism hyperbaric oxygen is the only effective treatment, with a success rate of more than 80% if it is administered immediately. In gas gangrene, crush injury, necrotizing soft tissue infections and severe carbon monoxide poisoning, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an important adjunctive treatment in the context of an aggressive multidisciplinary approach. If started early it can be life- and tissue-saving. The use of hyperbaric oxygen in some unproven indications and the lack of randomised double-blind studies must not hinder the use of HBO in disorders for which it is uniquely and highly effective.
