Otitis Media with Effusion Associated with Reflux Disease?
A study from the UK found a possible link between acid reflux and otitis media with effusion in children. Otitis Media with effusion, affecting about 20% of 2 year olds, may lead to hearing difficulties. The condition frequently subsides on its own, and in some cases antibiotics are prescribed or drainage tubes are placed in the ear. In the Uk study, ear fluid samples were assessed in 54 children between 2 and 8 years of age with “Glue Ear” who were undergoing ear surgery, Pepsin and other components of gastric juice were present in 81% of the ear fluid samples. The acidic nature of the refluxed material was thought to cause damage to the middle ear lining, promoting bacterial growth. The authors propose the use of anti-reflux therapy to prevent otitis media with effusion.
