JESSICA

Jessica is a very special name in hyperbaric medicine.

Falling down a well in Midland TX - GW B country - she has opened the way to the proper use of oxygen in a host of conditions. During her 59-hour entrapment her right leg was buckled behind her and became gangrenous.

The surgeon wanted to amputate the leg, but was persuaded to try oxygen treatment under hyperbaric conditions. She lost the tip of the fifth toe.

There was an angry letter in JAMA saying that giving a high dose of oxygen was contra indicated because of free radicals, despite the fact that her leg was saved! William Zamboni in Springfield Ill was funded to actually show that it was wrong to give more oxygen and ended up showing it was CORRECT. Instead of re implanting severed limbs up to only 4 hours, they can now successfully re implant to 14 hours! The data applies to transplanted organs - heart kidneys liver etc and many other conditions, and also resuscitation after cardiac arrest.
