HBO in diseases of the Liver
A number of investigators have studied the effects of HBO in liver diseases, such as hepatic failure with encephalopathy. This condition usually results from viral hepatitis and or exposure to hepatotoxic Drugs.
In 1967, Aubert Et. al., treated two patients in Hepatic coma with HBO, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the patients improved.
Dordain et al., in 1968, found HBO to be successful in treating a case of hepatic coma due to viral hepatitis associated with hepatic encephalopathy, Goullian et al., 1971, found HBO very useful in 16 patients with viral hepatitis.
Tacquent et al., 1970, found it useful in a patient with hepatitis coma.
Novikova and Klyavinsh 1981, of the USSR considered improvement of oxygen delivery to the liver and brain in viral Hepatitis A and B to be of great importance. They used HBO at 1.8 ata for 30 minutes and the number of sessions required was three to 24, 14 of the patients with severe viral Hepatitis, Hyperbilrubinemia exceeding 10 mg% and Impairment of the liver function were treated Three of the patients were in Hepatic coma, After 3-4 treatments Hyperbilirubinemia was reduced, liver functions tests improved and the patients started to recover. In hepatic coma, the signs disappeared with 5-7 treatments. Eventually all the patients recovered.
Orynbaev and Myrzaliev, 1981 used HBO in the treatment of 96 children with viral Hepatitis, A study of the long- term results showed residue symptoms of viral hepatitis in ONLY 7% of the patients( a frequency four times Lower than in the controls)
